Bridgestone to honor vets at winter Classic at At

Bridgestone Americas Inc. will extend a special “thank you” to America’s armed forces during the 2015 Bridgestone National Hockey League (NHL) Winter Classic on New Year’s Day. This year, the company is hosting 15 members of Hockey Saves Inc., a national nonprofit organization that provides military with a healthy outlet through hockey, as its special guests to the event. In addition to inviting a group of veterans to watch the game and root for their hometown teams, Bridgestone said it will honor its Hockey Saves guests from Chicago and Washington with a special in-game feature.

The Weekly Show is a weekly interview show hosted by Trevor McManus. This week's guest is Capt. Chris Kidd. Captain Kidd is a member of the United States navy. Although he was born in Ontario he moved to the US to follow his dream of being in the military. Kidd takes part in the Hockey Saves program. Hockey Saves helps generate donations to allow active military vets to get away for the job and play hockey. Captain Kidd takes about his experience in the military including tours to Afghanistan and Iraq and how Hockey Saves allows him a break from the chaotic military life.

After separate deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Sgt. Michael Wichmann wasn't expecting to find too many traces of his favorite sport when he reported to Fort Benning in Georgia to serve as a motors instructor. With thousands of servicemen training and working at the famous base, the Michigan-born Wichmann didn't foresee many hockey opportunities in the heart of the south.

What started as a small program in Fort Benning, Ga., to provide soldiers stationed at the local military base with an outlet through hockey has suddenly seen incredible growth in a few months. And it's definitely earned the attention of people all over the hockey world.

COLUMBUS, Ga.  Over the past several months, a group of soldiers has been rendezvousing at the Columbus Ice Rink for a friendly game of hockey.  It costs $180 an hour to rent the facility, but thanks to a non-profit group called Hockey Saves the rental fee is covered.  All the soldiers have to do is show up and suit up.

Jax Andrews was lost in Consol Energy Center recently, walking around in circles until Penguins star Sidney Crosby — “the nicest person I've ever met,” she said — offered directions. It was fitting, really, because Andrews is making a life out of giving people direction. Andrews is the founder of Hockey Saves, an organization that returns veterans back from service in places such as Iraq and Afghanistan to their first love: hockey.
